Food Insecurity and Immigration: Understanding a Hidden Crisis

Connecticut is home to a vibrant and growing immigrant population. Communities like East Hartford, Hartford, and New Haven are shaped significantly by the contributions of immigrants who have built lives, raised families, and strengthened the fabric of the state. And within these communities, food insecurity is a real and often hidden crisis.

BARRIERS SPECIFIC TO IMMIGRANT FAMILIES

Eligibility restrictions are the most significant structural barrier. Federal SNAP benefits are generally not available to undocumented immigrants, and many lawfully present immigrants face waiting periods or restrictions that limit access.

Language barriers compound the challenge. Navigating food assistance systems requires reading applications and communicating with service providers. When materials are not available in a family's primary language, the process can be overwhelming.

Fear is another significant factor. In an environment of heightened immigration enforcement, some families avoid any interaction with government programs, even when they are fully eligible.

WHAT COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS ARE DOING

Organizations like CT Foodshare and many of their faith based and community partners operate without regard to immigration status. Food pantries do not ask for documents. They provide food to anyone who needs it, creating a critical safety net for families who cannot access government programs.

Culturally specific outreach, multilingual staff, and trusted community messengers make a meaningful difference in ensuring that immigrant families know about and feel comfortable accessing available resources.

Our virtual food drive supports the kind of inclusive, community centered food access that CT Foodshare represents.
